Pro Series vs Home Range Christmas Lights: What’s the Difference?

Pro Series string light outdoors - warm white on green cable

Do you need commercial-grade Christmas lights, or will our Home Range do everything you need?

The answer mostly comes down to where you’re decorating and the size of your display.

Our Home Range and Pro Series are both designed to create great Christmas displays, but there are some important differences between them. From the cable and LEDs to the power supply and how far you can extend them, here’s what you need to know.

The cable

Our Home Range uses a thinner cable that’s ideal for everyday Christmas decorating.

Pro Series uses a heavier-duty rubber cable designed for more demanding installations, longer term outdoor use and commercial Christmas displays.

If you’re decorating your home, the lighter Home Range cable is likely to be all you need. If you’re creating a much larger or longer lasting display, particularly outdoors or in a commercial setting, the more robust Pro Series may be worth considering.

The LEDs

There’s also a visible difference between the lights themselves.

Our Home Range has smaller pinpoint LEDs, while Pro Series uses larger, bullet-style LEDs for a wider range of illumination.

How are they powered?

Our Home Range is a low-voltage lighting system and operates through a transformer, giving it a bigger plug.

Standard Pro Series lighting operates at 230V without the need for the same transformer, and using a standard size UK plug.

There are also low-voltage versions of Pro Series available, which can be useful for installations and public-facing spaces where low-voltage lighting is required.

More robust connections

Take a closer look at the two systems and you’ll notice another difference: the connectors.

Pro Series uses larger, more robust connections designed for bigger installations and repeated use.

For most home decorating, that level of heavy-duty construction isn’t necessary, which is why our Home Range offers a simpler system for everyday Christmas displays.

How many Christmas lights can you connect?

If you’re planning a big display, this may be one of the deciding factors.

Our Home Range can be connected in runs of up to 100 metres.

Pro Series can be connected in runs of up to 200 metres from a single plug, or up to 400 metres when using a splitter.

That makes Pro Series particularly useful for larger properties and commercial displays where you want to cover a significant area without needing lots of separate power points.

What about outdoor Christmas lights?

Both ranges include options suitable for outdoor decorating, but their protection ratings differ.

Home Range is rated IP44, while Pro Series is rated IP65, giving it a higher level of weather and water protection for exposed outdoor installations.

Always check the individual product information before installing your lights to make sure they’re suitable for where you plan to use them.

Which Christmas lights should I choose?

For most homes and everyday Christmas decorating, our Home Range is a great choice. It’s low voltage, connectable and can create a substantial display without moving into a professional lighting system.

Pro Series makes more sense when you’re decorating on a larger scale, need longer runs, want a heavier-duty system or are creating a commercial Christmas display.

Pro Series also comes with a two-year guarantee.

Still not sure which you need? Get in touch with the Christmas Direct team and we’ll be happy to help you choose the right lights for your display.

Koster vs Colorado: Which Artificial Christmas Tree Should You Choose?

Koster vs Colorado Artificial Christmas Trees
Koster vs Colorado Artificial Christmas Trees

Full and bushy or slightly more open and natural-looking?

We put two of our favourites side by side: the Koster Pine and the Colorado Pine.

Here’s how to decide which one is right for you.

Choose the Koster if you love a full, traditional Christmas tree

The Koster is all about fullness.

It has dense, bushy branches with two-tone green PVC foliage, giving it that classic Christmas tree shape that looks full from top to bottom.

It’s a lovely choice if your idea of the perfect Christmas tree is big, traditional and packed with lights and decorations.

Because the foliage is so dense, the Koster also looks great before you’ve added very much to it. Fluff out the branches properly and you’ve already got a full festive centrepiece ready to decorate.

You might prefer the Koster if you love:

  • A full, bushy Christmas tree
  • A traditional festive look
  • Lots of foliage
  • A tree that makes an impact in its own right

Choose the Colorado if you prefer a more natural look

The Colorado has a more open feel.

Its mix of PE and PVC needles adds natural-looking texture and depth, while the extra space between the branches gives it a less dense appearance than the Koster.

And that space is really useful when it’s time to decorate.

Your favourite baubles, bows and hanging decorations have more room to sit between the branches and stand out, rather than getting lost in the foliage.

You might prefer the Colorado if you love:

  • A more natural-looking artificial tree
  • Visible space between the branches
  • Statement baubles and larger decorations
  • A slightly more contemporary style

10ft Colorado Pine Tree scaled
Koster pine tree size comparison

What’s the difference between the Koster and Colorado?

The simplest answer?

Koster: full, bushy and traditional.

Colorado: open, natural-looking and great for showing off decorations.

If you’re someone who wants as much foliage as possible, we’d point you towards the Koster.

If the decorating is your favourite part of putting up the tree and you’ve got special baubles you really want to see, the Colorado gives you a little more space to work with.

What sizes do they come in?

Both trees are available in sizes from 4ft right up to 12ft, so whether you’re looking for a Christmas tree for the living room or something much bigger for a workplace, hotel or venue, there are plenty of options.

You can also choose pre-lit Koster and Colorado trees in selected sizes if you’d rather have your warm white lights already arranged through the branches.

One tip whichever tree you choose: don’t skip the fluffing.

Artificial trees are packed tightly for storage and delivery, so taking a little time to open out and shape each branch will make a huge difference to how full and natural your tree looks.

Why Do We Celebrate Christmas in July?

Christmas in July Image

Christmas in July might sound a little unusual, but it’s become a much-loved tradition for Christmas enthusiasts across the world. Whether it’s an excuse to embrace a little festive cheer or simply start planning ahead, there’s more to Christmas in July than meets the eye.

So, where did it all begin?

The origins of Christmas in July are thought to date back to 1933, when a girls’ summer camp in North Carolina held a festive celebration complete with Christmas trees, carols and a visit from Father Christmas. The idea was later popularised by the 1940 film Christmas in July, before retailers embraced it during the 1950s as a fun way to brighten the quieter summer months.

Today, Christmas in July is celebrated for different reasons around the world. In Australia and New Zealand, where Christmas falls during the height of summer, many people celebrate a ‘Yulefest’ in July so they can enjoy the cosy winter traditions we often associate with Christmas, from roaring fires to hearty roasts and mulled wine.

Here in the UK, it’s a chance to enjoy a little festive fun in the middle of summer. From Christmas-themed barbecues and garden parties to festive film nights and early decorating inspiration, it’s the perfect excuse to start thinking about the most wonderful time of the year.

Traditionally, Christmas in July is celebrated on 24th and 25th July, exactly six months before Christmas Day.

Why Start Thinking About Christmas Now?

If you’re anything like us, Christmas is never far from your mind!

For many businesses, July marks the start of Christmas planning. Retailers, hospitality venues, offices and event organisers are already exploring themes, ordering decorations and preparing to create memorable festive spaces long before December arrives.

And for those decorating at home, getting organised early often means the best choice of products, plenty of inspiration and one less thing to worry about when the festive season arrives.

Whether you’re planning a spectacular commercial display or simply looking forward to decorating your own tree, Christmas in July is the perfect reminder that it’s never too early to start getting inspired.

After all, the countdown to Christmas has already begun…

The Right Lights for your Christmas Tree

If you’ve been faced with tens of thousands of helpful suggestions when searching for Christmas tree lights on Google or similar (other search engines are of course available!), you’re not alone in being confused by the sheer volume of choices available.

Indoor lights, outdoor lights, warm white, ice white, multicolour, static, sparkling, flashing or multifunction, black cable, green cable, white or clear cable… it can be bewildering. But never fear – we’re here to help!

Indoor or Outdoor?

This is probably your first consideration. If your lights are going outside, you’ll need a minimum of IP44 rated light sets, in order to protect the wiring of your lights from the rain. If you are buying lights for an outdoor Christmas tree and there is no IP rating stated, just don’t buy them! Simple as that.

Outdoor Lights

Our Pro Series string lights are among the most reliable available to buy in the UK. Tried and trusted for many years, these lights are the go to solution for many professional installers and community Christmas trees. Rated IP65, with rubber cable, large LEDs and low running costs, these lights will last for years if properly assembled and stored between use. They’re not cheap – but over 5 or more years, we are confident you’ll end up spending less than if you buy cheap lights which continually need replacing.

Indoor Christmas Lights

For indoor Christmas trees, we have a range of lights that are low voltage with lighter cables and smaller LEDs. Which lights you choose will depend on the density of lights you prefer, as well as, of course, your budget! Many of the staff here at Christmas Direct use our Home Range fairy lights for their own trees, with 20m of lights being a popular choice for a typical 6ft tree. With all Home Range lights being connectable, if you have a bigger – or smaller – tree, just choose the appropriate length you’d like, and connect the sections together.

Another slightly different approach features lights that were originally intended for cone style trees, but we think they work beautifully on a 7ft or 8ft traditional shaped Christmas tree.

A 9ft Light Up Reindeer? Everyone should have one.

Sparkling Effect Mirror Foil Deer

When the grandchildren drop by unexpectedly, it’s always handy to have a giant light up deer around!

In recent weeks we’ve had Evie the Collie demonstrating just how big a 10ft Christmas tree is, and last week it was the turn of the grandkids to be wowed by our huge copper foil light up reindeer.

Well, at least it meant that Pete could spend some fun time with his two granddaughters while pretending he was still actually working…

This reindeer is part of a family of three which is part of our new sparkling mirror foil range with twinkling effect lights.

The range includes cone trees, gift box decorations, stars, double sided wreaths and hanging balls, as well as reindeer and we think they look amazing.

And so did the kids!

How Big is a 10ft Christmas Tree?

10ft Christmas Tree
10ft Christmas Tree

It’s the sort of question that we get asked a lot more often than you would imagine!

This week we brought in Evie, one of our several occasional office dogs, to help give a definitive answer. Now, we know that any self respecting fan of the Big Bang Theory is going to say something along the lines of “a border collie is not a standard unit of measurement” but the point is this: by relating products to objects which we are familiar with, we can get a much better feel for how big they are in real life.

So, one of our 67mm baubles is around the same size as a tennis ball, or perhaps a large apple, while a 40cm bauble is smaller by a what is, visually at least, a surprisingly large amount – the same size as a ping pong ball. The bare numbers really don’t tell the story in a way our brains can handle very well!

By now, of course, you’re desperate to know the answer to the 10ft Christmas tree question. You could say 3m tall, but does that get us any further down the line? Not really.

What if we said: “a 10ft Christmas tree is about four and a half times the height of a border collie called Evie”.

Much better.

How to Hang Net Lights

We’ve had one or two customers who want to hang our Pro Series Net Lights on outside or indoor walls, and need a very neat finish. Often, these lights are draped over hedges or bushes, where geometric accuracy is not so crucial. Here’s how to do it to achieve a great result!

This is not how to hang net lights
how to hang net lights

These net lights are built in a mesh, and like any mesh, they will contract if not “encouraged” to hang straight. Anybody familiar with a string vest will know what we’re talking about – and if you’re not, just google “Rab C Nesbitt” for graphic illustration of the pliability of a mesh…

Using a gutter hook to clip net lights to catenary wire

The trick to a good result is first to hang the net light at regular intervals from something that is straight and firm. In this case, we’ve used Catenary Wire, which makes an ideal anchor from which to hang the net, removing strain on the corner joints and creating a straight line at the top of the lights.

We’ve used our handy Gutter Hooks to do this.

At this point, you’ll find that while the first few rows of diamond shapes will hang nicely, as you go lower down the net, these diamonds will naturally contract, pulling the sides of the net light in and spoiling the geometric perfection of your installation. The solution is to secure the sides at regular points. In this demo, we’ve used simple cable clips pinned to the plasterboard wall. These make a tiny hole which can be easily hidden after the lights come down.

Often, however, multiple net lights will be joined together, and this can be done using cable ties. Another option to secure the edges of net lights is self adhesive hooks, which are easily and cheaply available from a wide range of outlets.

These nets are part of the Pro Series Range of commercial grade lights, all of which have been designed to withstand everything our British weather can throw at them – and us!

This project involved using some of our classic Christmas decorations, to show how simple decorating can be done in sports clubs, bars and hospitality venues. The venue for this particular display was Edinburgh Curling Club.

Our Home Range Icicle Lights and Micro Light Cascades are perfect for lifting any display with an eye-catching sparkle, especially when woven throughout festive greenery.

We offer a huge range of baubles, in a variety of colours, finishes and styles, which means there are options for just about any theme or setting. In this example, the combination of red, blue and ice blue baubles has been used to echo the markings on the curling rinks.

The newly refurbished clubhouse area features a modern design, complemented by our Green Cedar Garlands, to create a minimalist look whilst still delivering a classic festive feel.

Christmas Lights Installation – The Parklands Hotel

Parkland hotel - cluster lights

Read time: 2 minutes

We recently partnered with the Parklands Hotel, a 4 star boutique hotel located in the heart of Perth, to pull together a Christmas lights display that would enhance its traditional architecture and lovely gardens, while making it stand out in the city’s festive landscape.

As with any small to medium sized business, budget was highlighted as a concern, while the brief also featured a desire to “not go over the top”, to stick to a traditional upmarket look and feel, and to not tie up too much time on installation.

With this in mind, we opted for the timeless look of a warm white theme featuring a mix of our off-the-shelf Pro Series commercial grade lights.

Having spent an hour or so surveying the location, we decided to create a dramatic “avenue” of light leading up from the hotel car park to the main entrance. We did this by draping hedges with net lights and wrapping the trunks of the trees that defined the edge of the car park in our Pro Series string lights.

The Parklands Hotel boasts an excellent restaurant, with seating housed in a conservatory style setting, overlooking the lovely mature gardens to the front of the hotel. Perfect for icicle lights!

During our survey, we had noticed a very distinctive acer to the left of the main entrance.

With several diverging main branches at low level, it was a great candidate for wrapping string lights – something that always produces a dramatic talking point in any lights display. We used 10m lengths of string lights running from a multi-socket splitter at ground level.

Finally, the frontage of the hotel features a stone ledge at first floor level, which seemed to us perfect for running Pro Series cluster lights along, highlighting not only the main hotel entrance, but also the traditional architecture of the hotel frontage overall.

Combined with the existing festoon lights in the hotel garden, we loved the overall warmth and welcoming effect of what was, in reality, a relatively modest amount of lights, installed by 2 people in less than a morning.

Making the most of your fairy lights during the year

Making the most of your fairy lights during the year thumbnail

Read time: 2 minutes

We’re now approaching the end of January, and with the Christmas decorations down, our home can be left feeling empty and bare, but fairy lights are a great way to keep the warm glow in your home and garden long after the festivities have ended.
Here are a few of our favourite ways to incorporate the cosy glow of fairy lights into your home during the chilly, dark winter months.

Bringing Light to Your Home

You might be feeling like your interior is looking a bit bare once the festive decorations have been taken down, but a few simple touches really can make all the difference. Swap out the vibrant reds and greens from Christmas for warm white and light colours to keep it clean and fresh to start off the new year.

If you have a plain bookshelf, why don’t you hang some curtain lights to bring a touch of sparkle and illuminate those shelves. Or add them to your stairs for a nice radiance!

The Perfect Workspace

Let’s be honest, returning to work after the holidays is always hard and when the festivities are over we all feel like we need a little bit of cheering up again – I mean they literally call the third Monday in January ‘Blue Monday’, if that doesn’t say gloomy we don’t know what does.

With around one in seven adults working from home it’s likely you may have a home office, so why not brighten up that space to make it an environment you don’t mind working in. Ambient office lighting will make your space more welcoming and help to get you back into that productive mindset after your time off.

This could be as simple as replacing your festive tinsel with some low voltage festoons, or adding some battery lights to your shelves. For a home office space we recommend warm white for a subtle glow, that won’t distract you from your work.

Garden Lighting

Christmas may be long over but the dark nights certainly aren’t, so why not light up your outdoor space and create the perfect warm welcome to your home with fairy lights.

Wrap your trees with outdoor string lights, drape Festoons over a fence, or add a glow to your bushes with battery lights. These are all simple ideas to add a special touch to your garden during the darker winter months.

Did you know it actually costs less than you might think to run string lights? You can find out exactly how much will it cost you to run Christmas lights?
